This unit applies to the stripping, dyeing and finishing of footwear or other items. Materials to be stripped and dyed include various leathers and synthetics. Dyes, paints and finishes may be applied by hand or mechanical means.

Work may be conducted in small to large scale enterprises and may involve individual and team activities. Work is performed within defined procedures under direct supervision.

This unit requires the application of skills associated with planning and organising for safe and effective use of dyeing tools and equipment and operations. This unit also requires an ability to interpret and communicate job related information, check the quality of outcomes and identify and address problems relating to own work. 1.1 Shoes or leather product are inspected and customer advised on repair requirements and costs prior to commencing shoe repair

1.2 Job sheet is prepared and reviewed to ensure all requirements are included

1.3 Leather or material composition and finish of shoe or product are assessed to determine requirement for stripping and dyeing product

2 Strip shoe or leather product

2.1 Surface is stripped back to original form using appropriate technique, processes or materials to remove dirt, polish, surface

2.2 Preparing agent is applied to surface being dyed, recoloured or re-finished

2.3 Mask of areas not to be dyed using appropriate masking technique

3 Prepare and apply dye

3.1 Colour of dye, finish, stain, or paint is selected to match original requirements

3.2 Dye, finish, or paint is prepared in compliance with job sheet and client requirements

3.3 Dye, stain, finish or paint is applied by hand or spray can or spray gun to ensure adequate coverage and standard

3.4 Product is dried as required

3.5 Appropriate OHS practices are followed during the preparation and application of dyes, colours, stains, finishes and paints

4 Finish shoe or leather product

4.1 Leather dressing is applied to seal product, as required

4.2 Shoe or product is finished including buffing and polishing

4.3 Product is checked, packaged, bagged, labelled consistent with workplace requirements
