Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Select welding process and plan work
  • Identify job requirements and material specifications from work documentation
  • Select an appropriate welding process based on specifications
  • Identify and comply with work health and safety requirements and personal protection requirements for welding activity
  • Identify suitable electrical power outlets and plan work to maximise safety and productivity
  • Select appropriate welding equipment, confirm serviceability and follow correct ‘on’ procedures
  • Select and prepare appropriate ancillary hand and power tools required for the job
  • Prepare surfaces of material to standard required for welding to commence
  • Lay out material on working table or other suitable surface and anchor material to prevent movement
  • Adjust equipment temperature to prescribed settings
  • Lower any fitted screens or barriers prior to welding process
  • Operate welding equipment in accordance with manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures
  • Examine weld area, test for correct fusion of materials, and remove work piece
       
Element: Check quality of weld and finalise work
  • Inspect completed weld for compliance with specifications and quality standards, and rectify any identified deficiencies
  • Label or tag welded item and complete required documentation in accordance with workplace procedures
  • Clean tools and equipment and complete routine operator maintenance in accordance with workplace procedures and manufacturer instructions
  • Store tools and equipment based on specific storage needs and workplace requirements

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.
Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
