Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Determine job requirements
  • Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with SOPs
  • Identify job requirements from specifications, drawings, job sheets or work instructions
  • Inspect fabrication and determine suitability for repair, replacement and/or modification
       
Element: Assess and process material requirements
  • Assess material requirements in accordance with relevant codes, manufacturers’ specifications and SOPs
  • Obtain and/or requisition materials
  • Assess and obtain tool and equipment requirements in accordance with SOPs
  • Prepare fabrication for repair, replacement and/or modification to specification using acceptable workplace practices, tools and equipment
  • Mark out and prepare to specifications with minimum wastage using appropriate principles, tools and equipment
  • Ensure materials are cut, bent, rolled, shaped or formed to specifications using appropriate fabrication techniques/procedures, tools and equipment
  • Mark items for identification in accordance with SOPs
       
Element: Repair, replace and/or modify fabrication
  • Position/clamp materials for welding using suitable clamping methods, equipment, jigs and fixtures
  • Undertake pre-tack checks and determine compliance with specifications prior to tack welding in position
  • Prepare welding equipment and adjust settings according to requirements
  • Tack weld material or item using appropriate distortion minimisation techniques and procedures
  • Check material or item against specifications prior to welding
  • Weld material or item to specifications using techniques and procedures appropriate to job requirements
       
Element: Finish and inspect repair, replacements and/or modification
  • Ensure repair, replacement and/or modification is cleaned and finished to specifications using appropriate workplace practices
  • Inspect welds visually to assess weld quality against predetermined specifications
  • Assess completed repair and/or replacement for compliance against specifications
  • Prepare and lodge maintenance report in accordance with SOPs

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts.
